meeting penny lane

So, Sara and I are getting a dog. We had originally agreed to wait until we had been married a year, but the stars all aligned a little earlier, so come March 21st we will be bringing home the newest addition to our family: a miniature long haired dachshund that we've decided to name Penny Lane.

As of this writing, Penny Lane is a little over two weeks old. We get her when she's eight weeks old. Apparently that's kind of the "everything's ok with the average puppy" point that a lot of breeders are comfortable handing them off at.

Last Friday Sara and I drove to Morehead to meet Penny Lane for the first time:

Penny Lane

Sara meets Penny Lane

Sara fell in love instantly. She sits around the house thinking about puppies and watching videos on Youtube of dachshunds. It's pretty pitiful to watch.

And while it's not to the degree that Sara is, obviously, I'm pretty anxious myself to have Penny Lane around.  I fell in love with Sara's mom's dogs.  So, it'll be nice to have one of our own running around.

All my favorite people were in one room and Charlie sang the best Van Morrison song of them all:

And that wasn't even the best part! Because next this girl came in the room...

happy birthday baby!

kissYou know that feeling when your favorite band plays on Conan O'Brien for the first time or something? You're proud but kind of resent that all the philistines at home are getting to hear them without putting all the time into serious fandom that you have? And you feel slightly superior to them because they're not aware of the band's history or how awesome and complex they really are?

No? Just me? Okay.

Well today a large handful of folks are all wishing Sara happy birthday on Facebook.

No, I don't resent them at all - but I am really proud of Sara and how many people love her and want to wish her happy birthday. And I can't help but feel slightly superior to them all because no matter how awesome they might think Sara is, they don't get to see her the way I do. They don't get to appreciate the subtleties and nuances that come from spending every day with her. They'll never see her get keyed and start picking at me when she's bored, They'll never see the little hoppy dance she does when she's being silly, and they'll never see her trying to hide her tears when something utterly ridiculous on TV makes her cry.

Happy birthday, baby, I love you. Thanks for thinking I'd make a good husband.

sara's famous

Sara appeared in the following insert in all the Herald Leaders distributed in the Scott county area this week:

Crossroads H-L insert #1-1

The insert is advertising St. Awesome's new Georgetown campus.

In other exciting Sara news, my lovely wife started work at the John-Beck salon this week. She's working with our good friend Danny and she couldn't be more excited about it.

If you need an excellent, reasonably priced haircut, style, or color shoot me an email at patchdrury at gmail dot com and I'll get you her contact info. Or just drop by the salon. It's over on Moore Dr. If you need a testimonial, ask the Colonel. Sara cut his hair on Monday. Surprisingly, Sara said he was cootie-free.

I'm really, really proud of her.

Yesterday, Vlad and ET welcomed their first child into the world. Freddy Joaquin Acevedo hit the planet like a big ball of fury, at 7lbs 2 ounces. I'm sad to report he's been out of the womb less than a day and he's already better at sports than I am.

Mommy and baby are doing fine but are going to spend a couple of more days at the hospital because the food is so good. Below are some pictures - or you can click on this link to see the whole set.

Welcome to the world lil' Freddy. It was good to meet you. I'm sure we'll be hanging out lots. Don't believe everything you hear about me.

happy birthday colonel!

Today is the Colonel's birthday!

The Colonel & Mrs. Colonel Colonel rocked his teeth out
the colonel joins clark and max for a little tenacious d. "Watch me kill that bartender."

If you've been around this blog very long at all then you've no doubt experienced the Colonel. Besides being a big part of things here at Patchdrury.com, the Colonel is also a big part of my life off the net. He and his wife, Mrs. Colonel, are a two of Sara's and my best friends and their kids Lily and Harry are some of the cutest munchkins to ever escape the Lollipop forest. The Colonel is funny, smart, easy to talk to, and likes all the nerdy things I do. It sounds like I'm in love with him when I say that. Maybe I am, maybe I'm not. Frankly it's none of your business. Anyway, it's his birthday today, so you have to do whatever he says. So, you know, try to avoid him, 'cause you just know he's gonna want you to do something you don't want to do.

pistol report at the dame

As reported earlier, Charley The Intern's band, Pistol Report, played Thursday night at the Dame.  It was an awesome show.  Charley and his guys get better and better every time I hear them play.  They're easily better than half the bands that ever make it on stage at the Dame.

The highlight of the show for Sara and I was a new song that Charley said "mentioned" us and some other folks.  It was really awesome.  Pictures follow. The whole set can be found here.

it's almost over

My beautiful girlfriend, Sara, took her final exam at school today. She has to clock in a few hours tomorrow, but after that, she is officially finished with hair school!! The next step is taking her state boards in March. After that she'll be an officially licensed cosmetologist. You can't imagine how proud of her I am.

When she started the process over a year ago, while continuing to work a part time job, she would encourage herself by saying, "It's only a year. You can do anything for a year." Now, here she is, one day away from being done with school FOREVER!!!

If you've talked to Sara you know that, at times, her experiences in school were a little slice of hell on earth. She pushed through, though, because she's awesome and because, as you can tell from her current relationship, she has a knack for putting up with torture.

If you see Sara this weekend, give her a big hug and tell her how happy you are for her. Unless you're Dirty, the Colonel, or Charley The Intern. You guys have all lost your privileges.

Bret: Full circle....what's that called in literature....?
I'm getting rusty.
This year will be my 7th year out of the classroom.

Patch: In comedy it's called a callback. I didn't realize there was a reference to it in literature. All I can think of is foreshadowing, but that's not correct.

Bret: It's amazing how much stuff you forget, or purge, when you don't use it everyday.

Patch: Yeah, like the ten commandments.

the pygmy rattlers

For those of you who don't know, Sara and I are in St. Petersburg, Florida right now visiting her brother. St. Pete was the first extended stop on Sam Handwich and Nathan's tour of these United States.

We made the trip because Sam, Nathan, and a new friend of theirs got an opportunity to play a gig at a local lounge/hair salon called Star Booty (performing under the name The Pygmy Rattlers).

They did awesome. Sara and I were really impressed and proud. I took a little video of each song and I'm gonna compile them into one big clip and post it. In the meantime, here's the only clip small enough that You Tube would let me put it up without compressing:

weekend 11/17/07 - 11/18/07

This weekend was St. Awesome's 20th anniversary. It was a big weekend emotionally and production wise. I spent most of Saturday at the church helping with camera and lighting set-up and then ran a stage cam for the actual service. Stage cam is always fun because you get to be right out there in the middle of the band while they play.

Since St. Awesome's came into existence in 1987 the band did a medley of songs from '87 that included True Colors, Walk This Way, Faith, Everybody Have Fun Tonight, Living On A Prayer, and Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For. At the end of Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For a choir came out and turned the song into a big spiritual number, like they did in Rattle and Hum. It was incredible. Here's some pictures from the set-up and practice:

IMG_3637 IMG_3633
IMG_3638 IMG_3642

And here's a couple of shots I snuck with my iPhone during the service from onstage:
Live backstage @ st. Awesome Live backstage @st. Awesome.

After church on Saturday night I joined Sara's family at Giuseppe's restaurant for a going away dinner for Sam Handwich and Nathan. We had a reservation but still had to wait 45 minutes before being seated. Then the wait for our food was so long that Jan , her sister, and brother-in-law actually ended up leaving before their food came out. For staying I was rewarded with one of the best steaks I've ever had. Here's a picture before the mass exodus:
IMG_3654

Apparently someone had just called me a name or something...

The next day, on Sunday morning, it was back to St. Awesome's for two more services. After church Sara and I went to lunch with GG and then grabbed a quick nap.

That night we drove to Louisville with No Nickname Jen to pick up No Nickname Fred at the airport and have dinner at The Cheesecake Factory. Like an idiot I didn't take any pictures. We had a blast, though, and it was a nice chance to spend some quality time in the car and over food with the No Nicknames before they both head out to Raleigh for good in the coming months.

Awesome, but exhausting weekend.

this almost never happens

I've made a big deal out of how much kids like me here and in a recent column. And it's true kids do love me. Unfortunately sometimes kids don't feel good, or are in a bad mood, or their parents pinch them. When these things happen I can't be expected to always get a good reaction from a kid.

The Colonel posted the following video on his blog to try and put the lie to my claims about children. Which I thought was pretty low because I totally have proof he's not a real Colonel but have resisted posting it for years.

Patrick Has Such A Way With Kids from Bret Foster on Vimeo.

You can clearly see little Harry isn't really crying because of me. He obviously was thinking of something really sad like war, poverty, or growing up to be like his dad...

exploiting children = cash and prizes

My buddy Troy and his wife Della sent a really cute video into America's Funniest Home Videos and it's been posted on the show's website. I was really hoping it was going to feature Troy getting smacked in the nuts with a golf club, but this was good too.

Check it out by clicking here. By clicking on the link you make it more likely for Troy and Della to win some cold hard cash.

I used to watch America's Funniest Home Video all the time and laugh my head off. Then one day I saw the most perfect video ever. This little kid walked up behind his dog and checked his oil, causing the dog to yelp and jump three feet into the air. I had to quit watching the show after that because I knew that video would never be surpassed.

baby acevedo: now with discernable parts

ET sent me some new ultrasounds of baby Acevedo and gave me permission to post them. As you can see in the second picture, the sex of the baby has been determined. Either that or ET swallowed a roll of Certs.

Apparently, this early on, you can't always tell the sex of the baby from ultrasounds. Vlad is apparently taking great pride in the fact that there's no mistaking it's a boy in these pictures. I'm already intimidated.

a sad goodbye

Somewhere around the beginning of June I was heard predicting that this summer, the summer of 2007, was to be one of the best in recent memory.

Predictably, the universe heard my declaration and decided to make me look like an idiot. The universe is a real jerk.

There have been lots of good bits throughout the summer months: cookouts, concerts, time with friends, and beautiful weather. Those good times, though, have also been punctuated and, at times, overshadowed by some devastating losses.

As the warm weather has started to give away to cooler temperatures, and Summer breathes it's last fleeting breaths, my friends and I are presented with one more loss.

No Nick Name Fred, known in the real world as Fred Turner, his wife Jen, and their two kids Addison and Colston, are leaving St. Awesome's and Lexington.

Fred and GG invited the Colonel and I out to dinner a week or so ago to break the news to us. The Colonel, prophet of doom that he is, suspected something was up. I've never been so sorry to see the Colonel be right.

The loss of Fred and Jen to St. Awesome's is a terrible one. Fred brought sincerity, transparency and warmth to our church community. He was a voice of wisdom, humor and, when needed, healing. We'll never see another one like him come through the doors.

And though Jen wasn't a staff member, the loss of her to St. Awesome's is equally devastating. Jen is funny, and warm and enjoyably sarcastic at all the right times. Like a lot of the staff wives at our church, there's a realness to Jen that, unfortunately, you don't always see in women married to ministers. Jen, like Fred, is transparent and everyone is the better for it.

Worse than the loss to our church, though, is the loss to me personally. Fred has, over the past few years, become one of my best friends. He's one of the few people I know who can improve my mood simply by being in the room. There's going to be a big hole in my life that he and his beautiful wife used to occupy.

Fred, Jen, I love you guys. I'm excited about the greener pastures that lie ahead of you, and want nothing but the best for you. You're going to be missed, though, in ways that I can't even begin to elaborate on properly.

My buddy (and occasional commenter) Troy Price has a podcast where he tells people how to make money using the internet. Last night he had me and another friend from our past call in and spend a little time talking about our experiences using the internet to promote our work and or projects. We spent a lot of the time just talking about the good old days as well. If you're a big fan of guys talking over each other, occasional awkward pauses, and money - lots and lots of dirty, dirty money, you should give it a listen.
