patchdrury.com is no more
What has replaced it?

Okay, that's not exactly true. Patchdrury.com isn't going anywhere. It's going to stay right here and serve as an archive of my blogging over the past four years. All new blogging, however is going to be happening over at patchdrury.net.
That may seem like a random silly change, but basically, I've figured out that, to some degree, my lack of blogging over the past six months has been partly caused by how un-user-friendly my current blogging setup is (for me).
For a while now I've like some of the features that Tumblr offers. There have always been little things that kept me from making the switch. I didn't want to lose my old blog. I wanted my page to look more personalized instead of easily recognizable as a Tumblr blog. For the most part, with the help of some third party apps, I feel like I've made some inroads around those issues - so as of today, I'm making the switch to Tumblr and Patchdrury.net - and with that change comes the promise of much more regular blogging. I've actually gone ahead and backfilled the new blog with content to make the transition a little easier.
I know this only really matters to a small handful of people, but I enjoy blogging and this promises to make it easier for me. So, wahoo!
So to recap:
This blog is now an archive. All new blogging is taking place at patchdrury.net. Change your bookmarks.

blog cloud
Here's a word cloud representing my blog. The bigger a word is, the more it appears on my blog. Clicking it makes it bigger (that's what she said).

column - and an announcement
New column up at the Harlan Daily - it's about my rules for throwing a good party.
Also, May is my last month writing for the Harlan Daily Enterprise.
I've been writing Patchwork since November of 2004. I've felt like over the past year or more my writing has been experiencing a dip in quality. The columns don't come as easily. When they do come they seem, to me, as if they're lacking something. I've decided it's better to get off the stage now, voluntarily, while a few people might still be enjoying what I do - instead of dragging it out and using up any good will I might have accumulated.
My own misgivings aren't the only issue here. My life is about to change pretty drastically. I'm getting married in July, as most of you know. I've also been navigating a possible career change for some time now, and as that begins to look more and more likely, I'm seeing myself with less and less time for the column.
So, after this one, there are three more. My contact at the paper asked me to address my departure in my column - so I'll go into a little more detail about my decision and probably get a little sappy in a few weeks, in print.
Just thought my regular readers here might want to know.

instant messaging
In getting the new Mac up and running I downloaded a program called Adium that consolidates various instant messaging clients into one service. If you use an instant messenger and you think we'd like to talk to each other send an email with your IM name and the service you use to Patchdrury(at)Gmail(dot)com.

i've never had anything this hip in my lap
Welcome to my first blog post written on my brand new MacBook Pro.
The old Compaq was wheezing and clicking it's way into an early grave, so the decision was made to upgrade. And upgrade I did.

More about my take on the " Mac experience" in my next column. For now, I'll just say I'm enjoying myself.

the love of blog
Prior to yesterday's comment section discussion of why things like Twitter and blogging are so popular, Chris Stevenson sent me this link to an article on why people get so wrapped up in online social networking and the like. Which he followed up with the following quote:
Yes. Yes, you may.
Might I suggest that we are all kittens to your blogs red laser?
Yes. Yes, you may.

return to form
It's been a bit of a weird week here on Patchdrury.com in that I don't usually get as political as I have this week. I know you're all big boys and girls with thick skins and jaded hearts, so I'm not worried about offending anybody - but after a while you come to expect a certain style of content from this place, so if anybody was put out by having to listen to this crap in a place you don't usually have to, I sincerely apologize. I suspect, though, that as the election gets closer you might see more and more of that kind of thing around here. Sorry.
In the mean time, though, we can all agree that Mandy Moore is really attractive.

See? I'm a uniter, not a divider.

shout out
This goes out to the guy who, once every six months or so, ends up on my blog by googling "Markie Post bra size." I'm sure it's frustrating never finding the information you're looking for here on patchdrury.com, but I appreciate that you still click the link every time it comes up. It's comforting to me, in an odd way. Thank you and good hunting.

patchdrury.com: now iphone friendly
Since the latest iPhone firmware updates, iPhone owners have been able to bookmark websites on the home page of their phones. Of course since most sites don't have iPhone friendly icons in their root folders, the iPhone ends up taking a snapshot of the page and using that as the page's icon.
I figured making an icon had to be fairly simple and a quick google search confirmed it. So now, patchdrury.com has it's own iPhone webclip. I figure I'll change it to something a little more professional looking eventually - but for now, here's what it looks like:

So now, if you bookmark my blog on the home page of your iPhone you can see Sara's beautiful face and my ghastly profile EVERY DAY!! ON YOUR iPHONE!!
Technology is finally starting to pull it's own weight.

fixed!
For now, as near as I can tell, all the blog weirdness of the past few days has been fixed. Images are no longer floating to the left and comments are appearing in the pop-up again.
I'm still not 100% happy with the new layout, but it's what I'm gonna go with for now.
In the sidebar you'll see some new stuff. A playlist that I'll be striving to update regularly. There's a feed reader at the bottom with links to various post by friends of mine, or just points of interest.
There's also a Twitter badge. There you'll see my Twitter updates and the update of anyone I follow. I have no control over what they post, so it's possible you might see some adult language over there from time to time. Fair warning to those of you who have kids reading over your shoulder. If you have a Twitter site, let me know. I might be interested in keeping up with you (I never personally cared much about Twitter until I figured out how to update it from my phone).
So that's it for now. Let me know if you see any bugs or something isn't working.

same as it ever was
Resorted back to old blog template. New model had too many bugs at a time when, thanks to Lying In The Gutters, I'm temporarily getting more hits than ever. I'll probably make a change again in the near future. But for now, I'm going with old reliable.

welcome lying in the gutters readers
To the readers of Rich Johnston's Lying In The Gutters column over at Comic Book Resources: Welcome.
The Heath Ledger/Grant Morrison comments aren't to be found here on my blog, though. They're over on the VHive. Feel free to poke around anyway, though. Don't mind Dirty. He always looks like that.
To Rich: Thanks for the attribution.
To my regular readers, the majority of which don't give a damn about comic books: Go about your business.

new look
As often happens, I got tired of the old blog look (though it was my favorite in a long time) and decided to do some tweeking using a Gecko & Fly template. Not sure if I like it or not yet. May need to monkey around with it some more.
Also updated some links. If you have a blog that links to mine that I'm not aware of and would like to be included in my links, let me know.
Update - New layout sizing isn't quite right. Some of the old post with pictures are getting kind of jumbled. I'll work on that tomorrow.

connected
I've gotten half a dozen hits in the last couple of hours because a music blog called Largehearted Boy added my meager Best Albums of 2007 list to a master list he keeps of Best Of lists. I'm sure my monosyllabic music reviews are just the kind of hard hitting material his readers were hoping for when they clicked on the link...
Anyway, welcome to any of you link-followers who decided to poke around the rest of the place. Don't eat the fruit. It's just for looks.

50,000
At some point within the last 24 hours, we passed 50,000 hits. That's since February of '05, I think. I can't quite remember if the counter has been up from the beginning. The blog existed in some form or another for about five years before this most recent incarnation. No idea how many visitors there've been over my blogging lifetime. I know 50,000 isn't a lot in the grand scheme of blogging, but it felt a bit like a milestone, so shut your faces. You're always trying to tear me down.

taking a little break
Life has been a little rough around these parts for the past few days. The Patchdrury.com family took a couple of crippling hits over the weekend, so we're gonna close up shop for the next week. Check back next Monday. Thanks.

didn't see this coming

I'm gonna have a little trouble living this down. I thought I'd at least get a PG-13. What happened to me? There are Disney movies edgier than this blog!
I'm sorry everybody. I feel like I've let you all down. Especially Dirty.

site stuff
Comments are up again. Over the weekend I decided I was gonna start hosting my site on blogger's servers again so I could use some of their nifty new features. After a couple of self-inflicted headaches I decided this was a terrible idea and put things back the way they were. Except I didn't. But now I have. Mostly. I've closed the page that once represented my main page and will be pointing it here in a bit. It was kind of redundant.
I've got comments working again I think. And I've got my permalinks working even though they haven't worked in months. I've also got 50% of a tagging system going. We'll see how the other 50% goes.
That's all for now. Pictures and stories from the weekend coming once I dump my camera into Flickr.

yes, again...
I've changed my template again. In addition to just feeling the compulsion to monkey around with it every once in a while, I've also been trying to figure out a way to bring in the content from other stuff I'm doing around the web. I looked at an RSS parser but decided I didn't have time to try and figure it out this week.
This template is a three column design. I checked it out in IE7 and the third column keeps getting pushed down to the bottom of the page. I'm sure I probably have some values wrong somewhere, but I'll fix them some other time. For now, all you luddites with IE7 can just consider it your punishment for being behind the times. Or you can just download Firefox.
